The European Union Network of Laboratories for the Validation of Alternative Methods (EU-NETVAL)
The European Union Network of Laboratories for the Validation of Alternative Methods (EU-NETVAL) is a network coordinated by the European Union Reference Laboratory for alternatives to animal testing (EURL ECVAM). It was established in response to Directive 2010/63/EU on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes.
EU-NETVAL’s primary roles include:
- Supporting Validation Studies: EU-NETVAL provides support for EURL ECVAM validation studies to assess the reliability and relevance of alternative methods that have the potential to replace, reduce, or refine the use of animals in scientific research.
- Expertise and Competence: The network comprises laboratories with expertise in advanced in vitro procedures, various test systems, and measurement techniques. These competencies are crucial for addressing specific aims and objectives identified in EURL ECVAM’s strategies to achieve the 3Rs (Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement) in regulatory safety testing.
- Collaboration and Coordination: EU-NETVAL works closely with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Environment and the National Contact Points (NCPs) to facilitate interaction and ensure the smooth execution of validation studies.
EU-NETVAL contributes to the validation of NAMs through several key activities:
- Conducting Validation Studies: EU-NETVAL laboratories participate in validation studies by conducting specific tasks, such as single study elements of multi-study trials. This includes the validation of methods for detecting thyroid hormone disruption and androgen receptor transactivation assays.
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): The network develops and follows SOPs to ensure the reliability and reproducibility of in vitro methods. These SOPs are crucial for maintaining high standards in validation studies.
- Knowledge Sharing and Training: EU-NETVAL organizes regular meetings and training sessions to share knowledge and practical experiences among its members. This helps in the dissemination of best practices and the uptake of validated NAMs.
- International Collaboration: The network collaborates with international bodies, such as the OECD, to contribute to the development and acceptance of NAMs globally. This includes participation in the development of OECD Test Guidelines.
For additional support or helpdesk information, you can reach out to EU-NETVAL directly through the EURL ECVAM contact page. They offer resources and support for questions about the validation and implementation of alternative methods.
