The Netherlands Standardization Institute (NEN) and NAMs
The Netherlands Standardization Institute (NEN) plays a crucial role in ensuring the interoperability and reproducibility of scientific innovations, such as New Approach Methodologies (NAMs). Serving as a vital bridge between government, industry, and research, NEN facilitates the development and maintenance of standards that support the validation and regulatory acceptance of new technologies.
How NEN supports NAMs
- Facilitating collaboration
NEN provides a platform where researchers, regulatory bodies, and industry partners can align on best practices for NAM development. By uniting key stakeholders, standards are developed to serve as a framework for future developments. By leveraging our expertise, we help stakeholders demonstrate the reliability and reproducibility of their innovations increasing their acceptance. - Developing standards for NAMs
Standardization is essential for the acceptance of scientific innovations. NEN contributes to this by facilitating the development of global, European, and national standards that support NAM innovations. We do this for example in the NXTGEN Hightech Biomed consortium.
- NXTGEN Hightech Biomed consortium
The NXTGEN Hightech Biomed consortium helps tackle major societal challenges. The Netherlands has extensive expertise in Lab-on-Chip, Organ-on-Chip, Artificial Organs, and Cell Production Technologies. This consortium supports turning that knowledge into innovative products. NEN provides the instrument of standardization to create a common international language for these projects. For more information visit here.

- Driving international collaboration
NEN works closely together with international standardization bodies to harmonize standardization efforts. At the global level this is the International Standardization Organization (ISO) and at the European level this is European Committee for Standardization (CEN). This collaboration helps ensure that innovations are recognized beyond national borders, for example reducing duplication of validation efforts.
